KANSAS CITY, Kansas - A house call from a team of doctors turned out to be just the right prescription for a KCK woman.

Wearing masks and gloves, these first year med students looked right at home. However, they weren't treating a patient, they were painting her home.

The University of Kansas Medical School puts a big emphasis on community service, calling the annual event Med One Day.

“We’re trying to give back to the community that's given a lot to us and our education,” explained team captain Neil Bryan, a second year med student. “We try and reciprocate that. We try and support the community. So this is a good way of introducing that to these first year med students.”

For homeowner Clare Colbert, this was just the right diagnosis. The retiree couldn’t afford the new coat of paint on her own.

“I'm just grateful. It's a blessing from God,” Colbert said.

A blessing and perhaps a coincidence as well. Colbert is very familiar with the KU Med School and smiled continuously as she sat in a chair and watched the young men and women working around her home.

“I worked at KU Med for 32 years in the registrar's office, working with students in all four classes!”

Colbert’s home was just one of many projects KU Med students participated in on Thursday.
