KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Police confirm the apartment fire that killed a woman and child Saturday morning was deliberately started.
Officials said the fire broke out at 5:45 a.m. When firefighters arrived, Brandi S. Johnson, 34, was dead and 2-year-old Amiyah McClenton was suffering from critical injuries, including smoke inhalation and burns. McClenton later died at a hospital.
Officials say the child was Johnson’s niece.
Fire crews said they believe the fire started on the upper floors of the apartment. Police are interviewing a person of interest.
The American Red Cross said they are helping 26 people who were displaced with lodging, food and clothing.
