KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Kansas City Kansas Board of Public Utilities confirmed Thursday that the company had been told about a dangerous downed power line more than 11 hours before it killed a Shawnee man Sunday morning, raising new questions about why the utility failed to respond in a timely manner.
At least five power lines went down during a storm that day, BPU Manager of Electric Operations & Technology Bill Johnson said at a news conference Thursday, but they had a limited weekend staff to respond to all of the calls.
BPU and other law enforcement agencies launched an investigation into how the downed power line was left unattended until it killed Nicholas Moeder, 27.M
Moeder was electrocuted at Rosedale Park after stepping on the downed power line early Sunday morning.
Police received a call at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday about an electrocution, BPU Chief Communications Officer David Mehlhaff said. The first call about the downed line came in at 4:07 p.m. Saturday, he said.
A crew was eventually dispatched to the area, Johnson said, but he didn’t say who was dispatched, when they were called or why they never showed up.

Several people have told 41 Action News they made 911 calls about the downed power line, but a Kansas City Kansas Police Department detective said the 911 dispatch center received only one call.
