EUDORA, Kan. - Two deadly accidents now plague K-10, and one parent is continuing her fight the make the road a safer place to travel.
Police reports show a driver high on drugs crossed over the median on K-10 near Eudora back in 2011, killing then 5-year-old Cainan Shutt, Alison Shutt's son.
Her daughter, Courtlyn Shutt, was also in the car and remembers the crash. She read from a picture book Thursday telling 41 Action News us about her big brother Cainan who died two years ago.
“We went to the little place that had the nets and water." Courtlyn said.
"It's hard for us because we teach our kids, buckle up, and if you get in your car seat you'll be safe and unfortunately he was on a road that just wasn't safe enough," said Alison.
Another crash on the same road claimed the life of 52-year-old Randy Schimmel on Tuesday. This one was on Kansas Highway 10 between Renner Road and Ridgeview.
After Cainan's accident, Alison and her friends immediately petitioned to get crossover cables installed in the median.
Governor Brownback and the Kansas Department of Transportation responded by installing two 2 mile stretches of median barriers.
One near the crash site where Cainan' was killed and another near the K-10 and K-7 interchange.
In August 2012, the installation project for the cable median barrier on these two portions of K-10 began and was completed in late 2012. Construction on the K-10 cable median barrier installation project was approximately $1.2 million, which was entirely funded by KDOT, according to an agency spokesperson.
But Alison said they should be installed along the entire stretch of highway.
"We believe that we would still have Cainan if cables had cables been put in," she said.
And she is not giving up her fight.
"Anything we can do to make a difference and makes things safer and better, we're going to do," Allison said.
When 41 Action News reached out to KDOT about future plans for the highway, they released this statement that reads in part:
“In summer 2014, KDOT’s Johnson County Gateway Design-Build Phase 2 Project will begin construction. Included in this project are potential improvements on the stretch of K-10 from I-435 west to Woodland Road in Johnson County. At this time, exact improvements on this stretch of K-10 aren’t specifically known as KDOT is in the process of selecting a Design-Build Contractor. A Design-Build Contractor will be selected in early January 2014. Once the Design-Build Contractor is selected, KDOT will know more about the actual improvements scheduled to take place on this stretch of K-10.”
