OLATHE, Kan. - Firefighters battled a house fire Monday afternoon in the 800 block of Sheridan Circle in Olathe.
The fire was reported around 3:40 p.m. Monday. A neighbor called 911 reporting a house fire near Old Highway 56 and Interstate 35. No one was home at the time of the fire.
Before firefighters arrived, Olathe police officer Travis Shoemaker kicked in the front door of the home and rescued a yellow Labrador named JJ. A family cat is still missing.
The couple displaced by the fire will stay at an area hotel as part of the Olathe Fire Department’s After the Fire program.
A fire investigator is working to determine the cause of the blaze. A damage estimate is not yet available, but Capt. Mike Hall said the damage is extensive.
