Aisha Khan's disappearance classified as missing case, but police devote resources like an abduction

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass said Monday afternoon that Aisha Khan’s disappearance is classified as a missing person case, but police are devoting resources typical of an abduction case.

Johnson County Community College student Aisha Khan was reported missing at about 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16. She was last seen on the University of Kansas Edwards Campus in Overland Park.

Ten Overland Park detectives, 50 Overland Park officers, on-duty and volunteer members of a mounted search patrol on horseback, four FBI agents, as well as security from Olathe police, University of Kansas police and Johnson County Community College are working the case. A total of 400 person hours have been devoted so far to the case.

“A lot has been accomplished Monday,” said Douglass.

Police are reviewing cell phone locator data and social media communications for any leads, though Douglass did not provide any further details.

Douglass said they have no information this is an abduction, but also no information leading them to believe it is simply a runaway. They are devoting resources typical of an abduction case.

“In case she’s in trouble, we want to find her,” said Douglass.

Police have spoken with three construction workers who were on the scene at the time of the disappearance, who recall seeing a woman walking alone near the time of the disappearance, but could not confirm the woman was 19-year-old Khan.

Following the Overland Park police news conference, Khan’s husband, Waseem Khan, made an emotional appeal Monday for finding Khan. Khan’s father, Amanat Khan, broke down in tears and begged for the public to help look for her. Her mother, Fozia Khan, pleaded that whoever has her to please bring her home safely and they would forgive him for taking her.

Police said there is no reason to suspect the husband.
