Farmers markets going strong despite drought

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Even with high temperatures Wednesday, it was a busy day at the farmers market in Overland Park, Kan.

In fact, local growers have done fairly well this year, according to market manager Kristina Stanley.

"We have 68 farmers in the market, and we’ve only lost two for the entire season due to crop failure,” she said.

Jessica Stolte works for Bush farms and says the melons are great -- it’s other crops like corn, cucumbers and green beans that haven’t fared well in the heat.

Some venders say they are learning from the drought.

"We need to figure out how to grow food when it’s 110 degrees because none of us have done this before," Alicia Ellingsworth said. "It’s a brand new thing around here, so we do need to start now and take action.”

All of the farmers market produce are grown within a 250-mile radius of Overland Park.
