OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - An Overland Park, Kan., family wants to make sure everyone has working smoke detectors in their home.
Tuesday night, they honored their 8-year-old daughter, Taylor Jackson, who was killed in a fire last year.
Her parents said their daughter was spending the night at a friends house, when the fire broke out. The people living there forgot they didn't have working smoke detectors.
"Make sure you have an evacuation plan. Make sure your family knows what to do in case of a fire so you don't have to go through what me and Tiffany have gone through," Terri Jackson said.
This Saturday, the Overland Park Fire Department is having an open house as part of Fire Safety Month.
The Jackson family says they plan to be there.
