PAOLA, Kansas - The Kansas Department of Health and Environment suspended the license of a Paola, Kansas day care home after two infants died under the operator's care.
KDHE issued an emergency order of suspension against Kathie’s Kidz Day Care Home at 305 E. Kaskaskia, operated by Kathie Browning.
In August, an investigation was initiated following the death of a second infant in Browning’s care. The first infant died on April 30, 2010. Documentation revealed Browning was caring for at least 16 children, five of whom were infants, exceeding the maximum number of children allowed in a registered family day care home by 10 children.
“State law allows the Secretary of KDHE to issue such an order when, in the opinion of the Secretary, the order is necessary to protect children in the home from any potential threat to health or safety,” according to a statement issued by KDHE.
Browning has the right to appeal to the Secretary.
