PECULIAR, Mo. - An 18-year-old Joplin woman died and six other people, including an 8-year-old girl, were injured in a two-car crash Tuesday night in Cass County, Mo.
The accident happened at about 10:25 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 49 (US 71) about a mile south of Route J in Peculiar.
Sejal B. Pateldied in the crash. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, she and five other people were in a vehicle that was struck in the rear by a second southbound vehicle.
Both vehicles went off the right side of the road, the Patrol reported.
The only person in the second car, 49-year-old Steven D. Horack, of Overland Park, Kan., was seriously injured in the crash, according to a Patrol crash report.
Also seriously injured were two passengers in Patel’s vehicle, an 8-year-old girl and 31-year-old man, both from Lake City, Fla.
The driver of Petal’s vehicle and two other passengers sustained minor injuries, the Patrol reported.
Horack, the driver of the first car, was wearing a safety belt, the Patrol report said. Nobody in the second vehicle was properly restrained.
