HOLT, Mo. - At about 9 p.m. Wednesday, a family found their 19-month-old daughter dead in a pond on family property in Holt, Mo.
The baby’s father who lives in Parkville, Joshua Crawford, normally had custody of their daughter, Josslyn, but said she was currently with her mother at her home in Holt, Mo.
Crawford said the child's mother had been pushing for custody and that he finally agreed to give her a two-week visit.
"She said she was clean, I took her word for it. Now, I feel like I'm responsible for it," he said.
Crawford said he found out when he got a voicemail from Josslyn's mother late Wednesday night.
"So I called her and she said, 'I don't even want to tell you.' No emotion in her voice whatsoever," he said.
Crawford said Josslyn was found laying face-down in the pond. Now, he is pleading for answers into his daughter's death.
"She had the greatest smile, she had the greatest personality. I can't believe she's gone," Crawford said.
The child's mother was arrested and taken to the Clay County Jail where she initially said the baby stopped breathing, but then later changed her story and said the child fell into the pond. No charges have been filed yet.
Josslyn was taken to the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy but there is no official word yet on cause of death.
