INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Police are investigating human skeletal remains found by two boaters in Independence, Mo.

Tyler Adam and Justin Hardy said they found a human hand while canoeing on Little Blue River in the area of Necessary and R.D. Mize Roads around 3 p.m. on Monday.

Adam said they spotted the hand in a cluster of rocks about three feet above the water line. He said that it looked like they had been there for quite some time, and that they thought they saw other bones as well.

Authorities kept the rented canoe to help in the search and gave them a ride home.

A large portion of the river and the Little Blue Trace trail was blocked off Monday.

Jackson County sheriff's deputies, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri State Water Patrol were called in to assist Independence Police early. Officers will likely bring in cadaver dogs on Tuesday.

Police would not say whether the bones belonged to a child or an adult.
