KANSAS CITY, Missouri - An 11-year-old girl was in critical condition Tuesday after she was shot in the neck Monday night just east of the Truman Sports Complex.
It happened at about 9:15 p.m. near 43rd Street and Pittman Road.
Officials originally reported the girl was hit in the neck by a firework, but after further investigation, they found out it was a bullet.
Joe Vitale with the Kansas City Fire Department said arriving crews found the girl in the backyard with no pulse.
The girl with transported to an area hospital with extremely critical injuries.
No suspect information was available early Tuesday. Police said they were attempting to determine where the shot came from.
Officer Steve Young with the Kansas City Police Department says they are looking into everything, including whether someone was firing a gun in a nearby wooded area.
The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office says the shooter could be charged with reckless disregard which is a Class C felony. That charge carries up to seven years in prison.
