KANSAS CITY, Missouri -  A grieving family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center.

Kathia Casseus, 16, died in the detention center in February after complaining she couldn't breathe.

The detention center told 41 Action News they gave her water and told her to go back to bed. When workers went to go check on her, she was not breathing. An autopsy revealed she died from blood clotting in her lungs.

It was later discovered Children's Mercy Hospital prescribed Casseus birth control without the mother's knowledge, according to the lawsuit. But it's not known if that contributed to her death. However, certain types of birth control are known to cause blood clots.

Casseus was staying at the detention center after she was accused of stealing her mother's vehicle.

The suit also accuses Children's Mercy of medical malpractice and the detention center of negligence and violating Casseus' civil rights.
