The school district has had counselors on hand, trying to help their students deal with the loss.
Seven-year-old Kade Meyers was hit by an SUV while crossing the street outside his school on September 2. It happened right outside Madison Elementary after school was let out. Kade’s dad is the assistant principal at Gardner-Edgerton High school.
Sixteen-year-old Andrew Hurd from Gardner Edgerton High was killed in a two-car crash on August 23rd. It happened while the popular high school student was leaving soccer practice and heading back to his high school. Two other people from Gardner were injured in the crash.
After the second accident in as many weeks, a spokesperson from the Gardner-Edgerton School District released these statements:
“Words can not describe the sadness our district and the community of Gardner is experiencing today, said Dr. Bill Gilhaus, Superintendent. “Our community is a strong and caring one and we will help and support each other through this very difficult time.”
“Kade was a bright and happy boy, and such a joy to be around,” said Christi Whitter, Madison Elementary Principal. “The sadness felt today at Madison and in the community of Gardner is beyond words.”
