LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. - Lee's Summit Police say a 16-year-old boy drowned Saturday at Lakewood Lakes.
Police were notified of the possible drowning shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they were told the boy was with friends who were swimming across a cove when he slipped beneath the surface of the water and did not resurface.
The Lee's Summit Underwater Rescue and Recovery unit located the body about 6 p.m. and pulled it from the lake about 8:30 p.m.
The deceased boy was identified as 16-year-old Emanuel Palmer of Raytown, Mo., a junior-to-be this fall at Raytown High School.
A friend, Jenna Halterman, witnessed the drowning from shore.
"We all thought it was a joke," she said. "We thought they were playing and so the people that they called over to help didn't come right away. But then they realized it was really real, and they all jumped in the lake, and then they said to call 911."
Also assisting with the investigation were the Lee's Summit Fire Department and the Missouri Highway Patrol, as well as the Jackson County Medical Examiner's office.
