RIVERSIDE, Mo. - A driver died early Thursday in a crash after a short chase with the Riverside Police Department.

Authorities say an officer spotted the speeding driver on Interstate 635 around 1:15 a.m.

The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the driver sped away.

A short chase ensued, but police say the officer stopped the chase when the driver got off on Gateway Avenue.

Just a few moments later, the driver crashed into a building behind Beverly Lumber Co. near the intersection of Gateway and Riverway Boulevard.

Two separate fires ignited in the heavily-damaged vehicle. A police officer put out the first one. The second was extinguished by a firefighter who had arrived on the scene.

The unidentified driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
