KANSAS CITY, Mo. - While texting and driving is against the law, many drivers still do it. How do you ensure your loved-one makes the right decision when behind the wheel? There’s an app for that.
We have all been driving somewhere when we hear the text alert on our phone.
According to recent AT&T studies, thousands of Americans admit to checking messages while driving.
“Forty-nine percent of adult commuters are texting and driving. Six out of 10 of those drivers say three years ago, they never did it,” AT&T spokesman Chris Lester said.
Several apps now work to take your texting temptation away by automatically knowing when you are driving.
One example is AT&T’s Drive Mode. After the app is downloaded, you can set up your preferences for an auto-reply message, one that will be sent to anyone who texts you while you are behind the wheel.
By accessing the GPS on your phone, the app detects when you are driving more than 25 mph. When someone texts you, it sends a message to that person saying you are on the road and will text or call back after you have safely arrived at your destination.
Reading or sending a text while you are driving takes your eyes off the road for approximately five seconds. AT&T found that makes you 23 times more likely to get in an accident.
“It’s just not worth it for you to get killed, or to be in an accident where someone else is killed, and all the consequences that run from there, in terms of family tragedy,” Lester said.
Proponents for these apps said they are not only great for kids, but parents alike.
“It’s just so important to model the right behavior in front of your kids, so everyone is safer on the roads,” Lester said.
The Drive Mode app is available for android and blackberry phones.
