TONGANOXIE, Kan. - Four Nickerson, Kan., high school students suffered minor injuries Saturday afternoon when their van was struck and overturned in Tonganoxie, Kan.

The students from central Kansas were in eastern Kansas Saturday for the state debate tournament. They were heading from one school building to another when the crash occurred, according to Nickerson Schools Superintendant Bill Hagerman.

The students were riding in a school-owned van driven by a parent acting as a volunteer, Hagerman said. The Kansas Highway Patrol said an SUV driven by a 62-year-old Tonganoxie man crossed the center line and struck the van in the side, causing it to leave the road and overturn.

The 39-year-old van driver and four of her five teenage passengers were transported by ambulance to area hospitals, where they were treated and later released. The driver of the SUV was not injured.
