ATCHISON, Kan. - A new mural honoring famous aviator Amelia Earhart has been unveiled in her hometown.

California artist John Cerney painted this mural on Highway 73 south of Atchison, Kan.

Earhart was the first woman to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic at the age of 34. She received the Distinguished Flying Cross from Congress, the Cross of Knight of the Legion of Honor from the French Government, and the Gold Medal of the National Geographic Society from President Herbert Hoover.

The city unveiled the mural Wednesday afternoon.
