KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback is preparing to announce a new mental health initiative ahead of the start of the 2013 legislative session.
The Republican governor scheduled a joint news conference Thursday afternoon in Kansas City, Kan., with Sean Sullivan, secretary of the Department for Aging and Disability Services. The event will be held at the Wyandot Center, one of 27 community mental health centers throughout Kansas.
The administration didn't provide details about the initiative, but Brownback said in a recent interview with The Associated Press the state should examine whether it's providing sufficient mental health services. His comments came a few days after a gunman killed 26 people and himself at a Connecticut elementary school.
