SHAWNEE, Kan. - Kansas City Ice Center is opening new ice rink in Shawnee.
The city's first outdoor rink opens this Saturday.
Construction for the $1.5 million project started in August.
The pavilion includes an NHL sized rink.
The rink will be mainly used for public skating, but will allow for more game time for regional hockey teams.
"All the kids that come in here from little kids all the way up and real excited,” said Dean Nelson, the general manager for Kansas City Ice Center. “Not only about getting out there for a practice, but playing a real game out there."
More than 7,500 gallons of water will be used to ice the rink.
