LAWRENCE, Kan. - Rest in peace, Sunflower State.
Civic leaders have planned a tongue-in-cheek funeral for the state of Kansas this Saturday. They list the cause of death of as "resource starvation, triggered by political and ideological demagoguery".
The funeral will be held at the Plymouth Congregational Church at 925 Vermont Street in Lawrence on Saturday, June 8, at 3 p.m. A funeral procession to South Park at 12th and Massachusetts will immediately follow the service, according to a news release.
Mourners of the "once-proud state" are encouraged to wear black.
Among those delivering eulogies are: Kathy Cook and John Martellaro with Kansas Families for Education; Bryan Pfeifer, American Federation of Teachers; Kyle Russell, Johnson County Democratic Party; State Rep. John Wilson, Kansas District 10; Shannon Bade, Sunflower Community Action; Bob Eye, ACLU; Mike Caddell, Radio Free Kansas and Vicki Perbeck.
