Man dies after standoff connected to killing of two Topeka police officers

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Shawnee County Sheriff’s office has confirmed the man shot by police during a standoff in connection to the killing of two Topeka police officers has died from injuries sustained in the shooting.

Several gunshots could be heard moments after officers shot tear gas into a home in the 300 block of SW Western Avenue in Topeka.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, the man attempted to exit the home with a gun after the tear gas was deployed. Officers opened fire, hitting him an unspecified number of times.

“It is unknown at this time if the suspect fired the gun he was carrying,” the statement from the sheriff’s office said.

A few minutes after the gunshots, police officers were seen dragging a person from the home. That person was David Edward Tiscareno, according the Shawnee County Sheriff’s office.

Tiscareno was wanted in the shooting of Topeka police officers David Gogian, 50, and Jeff Atherly, 29.

Tiscareno was transported to an area hospital. He appeared to be unconscious as he was dragged from the home.

"David, come out of the house," officers could be heard saying earlier on a loudspeaker. "We know you're in there."

Dozens of officers and a SWAT team surrounded the home for several hours Monday morning. WIBW reports at least four people came out of the home early Monday morning.

The home is located not far from the location where Tiscareno’s vehicle was found Sunday night.

Investigators searched at least two other homes Sunday night. The first was in the 400 block of SW Buchanan, where officers located his vehicle. Authorities also searched a home in the 1200 block of NW Fifth Street.

Both searches came up empty.

According to authorities, Tiscareno opened fire on Gogian, Atherly and a third officer when they arrived to a Dillon’s grocery store in Topeka. The third was not injured.

"The community will help us give this guy up," Topeka Police Chief Ron Miller said Sunday night, adding that 75 state and local law enforcement officials were working on the case.
