TOPEKA, Kan. - A Topeka woman was critically injured in a house explosion late Monday morning.
The explosion took place around 11:35 a.m. in the 1900 block of Southwest Navajo Lane.
Kristen Veverka, with the Topeka Police Department, said a sprinkler system was being installed when a gas line was struck, causing the explosive impact. Veverka said the house was leveled.
The woman, who was in the house at the time of the explosion, was transported to the hospital via helicopter with severe burns.
Police said the explosion was felt and heard up to three miles away.
Firefighers worked for more than six hours to tame the blaze.
Topeka’s emergency management coordinator told NBC Action News the utility worker that was responsible for the explosion was unharmed.
