BATES COUNTY, Missouri - It only cost $600 for David Jungerman to paint a huge message on one of his old storage trailers. However, the cost of a strong statement has risen after someone lit the trailer on fire twice.
The trailer, parked in Jungerman's cornfield reads, "ARE YOU A PRODUCER OR A PARASITE? DEMOCRATS – PARTY OF THE PARASITES.”
The unsympathetic 72 year old sign creator says sometimes the truth hurts, “If the shoe fits, wear it. If not, it's just words. Drive on by and forget it."
Democratic Consultant Steve Glorioso calls the sign offensive. He says, “It shows a trend in politics right now of personalizing everything. To call some one a parasite, you're talking about 35% of the public that are democratic, that's like 80 million people."
Glorioso apparently isn't alone. The trailer has been torched twice. A home Jungerman owns on the 6,800 acres of land was lit on fire as well.
In all, the arsons will cost him $46,000 in damage.
Still, Jungerman stands behind his right to free speech, “That’s all they think about is 'What can we get free?' And Obama, that's all he talks about is what he's going to give people.”
In just the last day, the parasite finger pointing has turned.
Glorioso points out, “This farmer had accepted over a million dollars in tax subsidies. Basically, parasite? The hypocrisy is almost breathtaking.”
Jungerman says the money came from a Department of Agriculture program that required farmers to grow a certain amount of food supply.
He explains that when crop prices dip, the government makes up the difference through subsidy payments, “It's not money you put in your pocket. You're spending it on the land."
