BRECKENRIDGE, Mo. -
A 12-year-old child from Breckenridge, Mo., has died after he or she was shot, apparently by accident, inside a home in the tiny Caldwell County town.
The Caldwell County Sheriff’s office released a statement Saturday, saying it was called to a home in the town of less than 400 people about 8:45 p.m. Friday.
Lawmen determined that a 12-year-old boy or girl –- the sheriff’s news release didn’t say which –- had “mishandled a handgun and had suffered a gunshot wound.”
The child was transported by Life Flight helicopter ambulance to the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he or she later died.
In addition to ambulance crews, the call was investigated by officers from the Missouri Highway Patrol and the police departments of Braymer, Hamilton and Cameron, Mo. The Caldwell County Sheriff continues its investigation of the incident.
