JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri is spending an estimated $7 million for what amounts to a large public opinion poll on the Republican presidential race. And the survey won't even have the right list of presidential contenders.
Although Missouri is holding a presidential primary Tuesday, the votes won't count for awarding delegates to the Republican National Convention. Newt Gingrich won't be on the ballot, even though several Republicans who already quit the race will be listed. And because of all that, frontrunner Mitt Romney isn't even campaigning in Missouri.
Rick Santorum is the only presidential candidate to have held rallies in Missouri. This past week, Santorum appeared with James Dobson, founder of the evangelical Christian group Focus on the Family. A political action committee backing Santorum also is airing ads in Missouri.
