MARYVILLE, Mo. - An assault that killed a Northwest Missouri State student early Friday morning likely consisted of a single punch, Maryville's top-ranking police officer said.
According to court documents, 21-year-old Tomarken Smith was assaulted around 1:20 a.m. near the corner of Fourth and Market streets in Maryville, less than a mile from campus.
Smith fell to the ground and hit his head on the concrete, the documents stated.
Smith, a senior pre-professional studies major and coaching minor from St. Louis, died about an hour later at St. Francis Hospital, according to a news release from the university.

Keith Wood, the Director of Public Safety for the City of Maryville, said he believed it was one punch that killed Smith.
Tony M. Overlin, 32, and Kevin D. Mooney, 23, were charged with one count each of second-degree murder and first-degree assault in Smith’s death.
A police sergeant saw two men running away from Smith after the assault and recognized them as the same two men who were involved in an altercation with Smith inside Molly’s Bar just after 1 a.m.
