SURPRISE, Ariz. - Good news and bad news arrived for the Royals on Thursday.
The club finally made contact with left-handed relief pitcher Jose Mijares. The Royals said Mijares is awaiting his travel documents in Caracas, Venezuela. Once he receives those documents, he’ll be headed for Royals spring training in Arizona. The Royals were told Mijares has been dealing with family issues, and they hadn’t been able to reach him for the previous eight days.
Mijares was the only Royals pitcher who did not make it on time for the club’s official reporting date this past Monday. He’s expected to contribute this season in the Royals bullpen after spending the last four years with the Minnesota Twins.
The Royals also caught a bad break. Backup catcher Manny Pina suffered a torn meniscus at spring training on Wednesday and will undergo surgery in Kansas City in the next few days. He’s expected to be out for four weeks.
