KANSAS CITY, Missouri - It’s been a while since Alex Gordon has come through with a big offensive play for the Royals. But that changed on Friday night.
Gordon became the Royals' hero by hitting his first career walk-off home run to give Kansas City a 7-5 victory at Kauffman Stadium. The win snapped the Royals’ five-game losing streak.
It was the Royals first walk-off home run since David DeJesus on July 12, 2008 against Seattle. Blake Wood, who pitched in the ninth, earned his first major league victory.
The Orioles scored two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead. One run came on a Royals error. Adam Jones grounded a shot to Wilson Betemit at third. But Betemit fumbled it, allowing Ty Winnington to score to put Baltimore on top.
The Royals took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Betemit hit a two-run single and Rick Ankiel had a double that scored Jason Kendall.
Right-hander Sean O’Sullivan made his home debut for the Royals. The starting pitcher allowed three runs, four hits and two walks in six innings.
