KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Coming off a weekend of beating top-ten opponents, each of our local college basketball teams won awards on Monday.
Kansas State’s Rodney McGruder was named Big 12 Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks. Mizzou’s Laurence Bowers won the SEC Player of the Week award. KU’s Ben McLemore has been named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week.
McGruder averaged a team-high 19.5 points on 55.2 percent shooting in wins against Texas Southern and then-No. 8 Florida. The senior poured in a season-high 26 points against Texas Southern. He also helped K-State upset Florida at the Sprint Center by finishing with 13 points and six rebounds. It was K-State’s first regular-season, non-conference Top 10 win since 1981.
Bowers averaged 17 points and six rebounds for the Tigers in wins against South Carolina State and then-No. 10 Illinois. Andy Katz from ESPN also named Bowers the National Player of the Week. Bowers scored a team-high 23 points against Illinois to help the Tigers win the Braggin’ Rights game in St. Louis. He also had 10 rebounds in Mizzou’s fourth straight win in the Braggin’ Rights game. Bowers now has four double-doubles this season.
McLemore helped KU beat Ohio State for the third time in the last 12 months. The freshman averaged 18 points and 6.5 rebounds in KU’s wins against Richmond and Ohio State. The guard from St. Louis finished with 14 points and seven rebounds against the Spiders. Then, he came up with a team-high 22 points and six rebounds against the Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio in KU’s first true road game of the season. Josh Selby was the last KU freshman to win the Big 12 Rookie of the Week award.
