Big 12 men's basketball awards: Withey an All-Conference selection; Bruce Weber is top coach

DALLAS - Kansas center Jeff Withey is one of three players from the Sunflower State named to both versions of the All-Big 12 men’s basketball team.

The coaches’ team and awards were announced Sunday night. The Associated Press released its winners Monday.

The coaches also named Withey the conference's best defensive player. The senior is joined on both teams by KU teammate Ben McLemore and Kansas State’s Rodney McGruder.

Bruce Weber, the first-year coach at K-State, was named Coach of the Year by both groups.

Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart, named the league’s best player and top freshman by the coaches and media, was also named a first-teamer by both.

Oklahoma forward Romero Osby was the fifth member of the All-Big 12 coaches’ team. Baylor’s Pierre Jackson was the fifth member of the AP team.

Smart joins Texas' Kevin Durant (2007) and Kansas State's Michael Beasley (2008) as the only players to be named both player and freshman of the year by the coaches.

Five guards make up the coaches’ second team: Baylor's Pierre Jackson, Kansas' Travis Relaford, Kansas State's Angel Rodriguez, Oklahoma State's Markel Brown and Iowa State's Will Clyburn, a transfer from Utah who was newcomer of the year.

Osby, Clyburn, Brown, Rodriguez and Baylor’s Isaiah Austin made up the AP second team.
