LAWRENCE, Kan. - When Charlie Weis took over the Kansas football program, he knew he had a tall task in front of him to improve the roster. After a whirlwind several weeks on the road recruiting, Weis has landed 20 players in his first class at KU.
"I don't have enough fingers to put in the dike, if that's what you are saying right now. There's plenty of holes yet to fill, but I think we made a good start."
Weis was looking for instant-impact players. So, his first class is heavy on transfers. The class includes eight junior college transfers and three from four-year universities. The Jayhawks added three transfer quarterbacks. Former Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist will enter spring ball as the projected starter. Former BYU signal caller Jake Heaps will sit out this season and have two seasons left to play. The program also added Turner Baty. The sophomore just won a national championship at City College of San Francisco.
"When you bring in three quarterbacks in one year, you obviously believe that there's a major problem at that position."
Weis says his staff also focused on added defensive lineman. The Jayhawks have signed four already with more potentially on the way. Weis indicated he expects to add several more transfers at the end of the semester.
"We have some additional reinforcements that we already have agreements with that they are going to be coming."
