ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Chiefs will be snuggling in to their own beds tonight. The team broke camp at Missouri Western State University. After a weekend trip to St. Louis, training camp will resume in Kansas City. That means some quality time with the wife for running back Peyton Hillis.
“She’s missing me and the dogs are giving her all kinds of trouble right now. I know she’s had some family up to help keep her occupied but I’m looking forward to going back and sleeping in my own bed and taking it easy for a little while,” he said.
The team leaves St. Joseph with a good taste in their mouths. The 27-17 victory over Arizona in the preseason opener confirmed to players like Tamba Hali that camp has been productive.
“Training camp went well. The guys came out and we had a great attitude about the season and worked hard doing the things the coaches wanted us to do. I’m hoping we will continue to build on that,” he said.
The next step will come Saturday at 7 p.m. in St. Louis. The Chiefs will play the Rams without several players.
Head coach Romeo Crennel ruled out Cyrus Gray, Ethan Johnson, Cameron Sheffield, De'Quan Menzie and Brandon Flowers.
The injury to Flowers is the most concerning. The veteran cornerback was only expected to miss a few days of camp. Instead, he has been out of action for more than two weeks with a foot injury. Crennel acknowledged the healing process was taking longer than expected.
“He’s still working to try to get better. I saw him this morning, and he’s doing all that he can. We’re sending him to the doctors and we’re trying different things to try and get it better. He’s getting better slowly, not fast enough, but all we can do is kind of hang on and see what happens.”
