Chiefs to introduce quarterback Alex Smith

The Kansas City Chiefs will introduce Alex Smith Wednesday afternoon at a news conference at Arrowhead Stadium.

Smith, projected as the starter at quarterback unless the Chiefs make another move in the draft or free agency, joins the team via trade with the San Francisco 49ers. The trade was widely reported last month and made official Tuesday at the official beginning of the new NFL season.

“After many discussions with the 49ers and Alex, we were able to come to an agreement that we felt was mutually beneficial,” Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said. “Alex wanted to be a member of the Chiefs; we are excited to have him and we think he can help improve this team.”

Smith is joined by free agents Chase Daniel (QB), Anthony Fasano (TE) and Mike DeVito (DT) as new acquisitions on Wednesday.

“I am very blessed and thrilled to be joining the Chiefs family,” Smith said. “I’d like to thank the Hunt family, John Dorsey and Coach Reid for giving me the opportunity to play football for such a proud franchise. I know from experience that Chiefs fans are among the greatest in the NFL and I’m really looking forward to Sundays at Arrowhead Stadium.”

Chiefs first-year coach Andy Reid says Smith appears to be a good fit in Kansas City.

”We are excited to have him on board,” Reid said. “We’ve seen him play at a high level and he can be very impressive. We are anxious to get him in the building and get him started learning our system.”
