ST. JOSEPH, Missouri - The day started dark and gloomy. However, all was well that ended well for the Chiefs at their first day of training camp at Missouri Western State University.
A brief thunderstorm forced the team inside for the beginning of their first workout. After about an hour, the weathered had cleared, and the team hit the outdoor practice fields.
The first workout provided some insight in to the latest developments of the team. For instance, Jamaal Charles participated in live action for the first time this offseason after undergoing shoulder surgery.
"It felt great. We've got plenty more practice. So, I didn't want to do too much. The coaches kept it nice for me. I felt good out there."
The Chiefs did hold three players out of practice: Dion Gales, Ikechuku Ndukwe and Brian Waters. Those three were either injured or failed their conditioning tests. Head coach Todd Haley refuses to talk about injuries at camp. He did say that Waters did not fail his conditioning test like last year.
"He passed the run test in flying colors."
Charlie Weis will not be passing any run tests any time soon. The Chiefs' offensive coordinator needed the help of a motorized scooter and a cane to move around practice. Weis was sporting a big knee brace. Haley says the injury was fresh.
"His knee went out at the 11th hour. As bad of timing you could have for him, but he toughed it out."
