The National Congress of American Indians is calling for the elimination of Native American mascots in sports.
They said the mascot names play a role in racial inequality and lower the self-esteem among Native American youth.
The group says nearly a thousand organizations like the Washington Redskins have offensive mascots.
"It's time for a change. It's no longer acceptable, so it is no longer acceptable for us to hold on to those mascots that continue to oppress a people," NCAI Executive Director Jacqueline Pata said.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the Redskins' name in Washington honors the tradition of Native Americans.
