KANSAS CITY, Mo. - I got an email from a lady today who wanted to know if I ever had anything good to say about anything. I thought about it for about five seconds -- and the answer is no.
I think you all know by now this is not the place to come to for your daily dose of Kumbaya. Now, I will tell you with confidence better days are ahead at the Truman Sports Complex.
I know we've been down this long road of promises before. The Chiefs and Royals bilked taxpayers for half a billion dollars to renovate the 35-year-old dual stadiums.
There was the underlying threat of losing the teams if we balked and failed to deliver.
The owners in return, I recall, gave a lukewarm pledge that they would fix their downtrodden teams. On paper, they've finally delivered and made some costly investments.
I've been told the recent house cleaning at Arrowhead is costing Clark Hunt between $60 to 65 million.
That's to run off the old regime and bring in the new one.
That’s just for personnel changes.
On the other side of the parking lot, David Glass -- baseball's most notorious tightwad -- became the second coming of the late Larry Stewart, the city's much adored Secret Santa.
Glass spending some money in free agency on pitching; it could have been more, but at least he's giving the Royals their best chance to win since Whitey Herzog managed this team 35 years ago.
How bad has it been around here? Let me remind you.
The Chiefs haven't won a playoff game in 20 years. The Royals haven't been to the playoffs in nearly 30 years.
The Royals have had one winning season in 19 years, and haven't finished better than third place since 1995.
The Chiefs haven't had back-to-back winning seasons since 1997. Heck, they've had five head coaches in the last eight years, and they haven't drafted a quarterback in the first round in 30 years.
It is depressing to be a sports fan in this town.
You say it can't get any worse? No, no, no.
Never ever say that. We all should have learned by now.
That’s Jack’s Smack.
