JACK'S SMACK: NCAA enforcement division is a joke, should be shut down

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - I didn't think I would ever live long enough to see the almighty college watchdog known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association have to bust itself for unethical behavior.

The NCAA put out a press release indicating the investigation into Frank Haith at Missouri has been put on hold.

The NCAA reportedly was prepared to drop some serious penalties on the Missouri basketball coach for not telling the truth involving a Miami recruit. The mother of Duquan Jones says she received $10,000 after agreeing her son would play basketball for Haith at Miami.

Haith denies any wrongdoing, but the NCAA apparently doesn't believe him.

But it may not matter now.

I cannot believe the enforcement staff of that organization went out and hired the criminal lawyer who represents Nevin Shapiro -- the Miami booster who was delivering big money under the table to Hurricane recruits.

Shapiro is in prison on a $930 million Ponzi scheme.

The NCAA blew the whistle on itself when it learned that Shapiro's attorney was hired to obtain information through a bankruptcy proceeding that did not involve the NCAA in a clear violation of their own rules for finding evidence.

This falls on the heels of alleged misconduct by a woman named Abigail Grantstein, the lead investigator for the NCAA.

She was looking into a probe of UCLA basketball player Shabazz Muhammad, who was recruited by Kansas but chose to attend UCLA.

Grantstein’s boyfriend was reportedly speaking loudly on a flight from Chicago to Memphis about how his girlfriend was an attorney for the NCAA and she would find Muhammad to be ineligible to play this season.

Grantstein graduated from KU’s School of Law and was also investigating Haith at Missouri.

It makes no sense.

The LA Times reported that the NCAA recently fired Grantstein.

This is an unbelievable bombshell, and there will surely be additional fallout.

Penn State already has multiple lawsuits against the NCAA. You don't think their attorneys are now going to get in line and go after the NCAA after its shoddy work in the Miami investigation?

How can anyone take this organization seriously? The NCAA enforcement division is an absolute joke. Shut it down!
