KANSAS CITY, Mo. - After watching No. 1 Duke get blown out of the water at Miami, I committed a cardinal sin in this business by suggesting to a colleague, on the air, that Kansas deserves to be the new No. 1 team in college basketball.
At the time, it seemed like a pretty innocuous statement to make.
I was being sincere in my praise of KU.
I think any of five teams are deserving of the top billing. But, that's not the point.
I got blasted by KU fans accusing me of being a front runner and wanting to jump on the Kansas bandwagon. Really?
I can't believe my beaker friends would even suggest something like that.
It's all good. It did provide one of the better laughs of the day.
Anyhow, some of the messages were pretty clever, but some of the stuff was pure rubbish. But I still love the passion of college fans.
Look, I think most of you know where my allegiance lies. There's no wishy-washy stuff here.
I ask but one favor: Never, ever suggest the idea of me jumping on a KU bandwagon. I don't want to be accused of being a fair weather fan.
Football is my favorite, and from all the years of covering sports around here, I've yet to see one of those KU bandwagons in the fall.
That’s Jack’s Smack.
