Kansas high school football player loses part of his leg to football injury

MCLOUTH, Kansas - A Kansas high school football player has lost part of his leg after suffering an injury during a game two weeks ago.

Trevor Roberts is 17, and a multi-sport athlete with a big smile. He's happy to be alive, despite having a leg amputated six days ago.

Trevor is a senior on McLouth's team.

He plays wide receiver and other positions. He had just scored three touchdowns, but then his leg was broken near the end of the second quarter in a game Sept. 24.

He was taken to a Wichita hospital and has a medal rod placed in his leg during a surgery that night.

Trevor was home two days later, but it was last week when he came down with a heavy fever that his guardians knew something was wrong.

Doctors discovered gangrene in his wound, and removed a portion of Trevor’s leg during surgery last Thursday at University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

A third surgery was performed on Monday, and Trevor’s guardians say he is recovering well at KU Hospital.

“Everything's looking really good right now,” Jerrad Humerickhouse said. “The doctors are really pleased with the progress.”

Since then, Trevor has been in and out of hospitals. But he gave us a big wave Wednesday.

"I was definitely scared. He told me it was going to be my leg or my life. He said there was a real slim chance I'd be able to come out with my leg. It was real shocking. I never thought this would happen to me," said Trevor.

Trevor and his family say they have no anger about the injury.

Trevor is a candidate for homecoming king.

He hopes to get out of the hospital in time to make it to Friday's ceremony.
