OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - For three years, Paul Grieco toiled away on the Blue Valley Southwest High School junior varsity wrestling team. After his junior season, he went up to coach Cody Parks and asked what he needed to do to crack the varsity squad for his senior year.
"We told him there's some things he had to do over the summer and some strides that he had to make in the offseason. He dove in both feet."
Grieco spent the summer dedicated to improving his skills.
"I did a lot of wrestling over the summer. I think I had about 83 matches. I wrestled hard. I worked out hard at the gym. Played catch up."
The senior more than caught up to his peers. Wrestling at 152 pounds, Grieco has compiled a 17-1 record. He helped Blue Valley Southwest win the Johnson County Classic for the first time. Grieco finished second in his weight class in that tournament.
