KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Sumner Academy's Benny Parker has some pretty big shoes to fill in his senior season...his own.

"I started out as a sophomore. I had a big role in winning a state championship. Then, last year, we had to go through many obstacles to win that one too. So, this year, I am just trying to finish out strong."

Parker has led Sumner to back-to-back state championships. So, anything short of a state title in his senior season would be a disappointment. That has put a lot of pressure on the point guard. His coach, Dan Parra, says his star has handled it well.

"He's just a tremendous team player. He is a leader on and off the court. He can do everything on the court, but it's more of his demeanor and what he brings to the table. He is a leader by example."

Parker has led the way by averaging roughly 24 points and seven assists a game.

"We have been hitting it hard at practice, practicing hard. For me, (the goal is) to just keep getting better and go to state."

The Sabres had a rough stretch early in the season but have rebounded behind their senior leader. The team has rattled off nine straight wins to improve to 13-3. Parra is relying on his senior stalwart to keep Sumner headed in the right direction.

"He has been the leader, the point guard for two years on two state championship teams. (We) rely on him on the court to get us through some adversity and get us through the tough parts of games."

Next season, the Nebraska Cornhuskers will be relying on Parker's talents. For now, he has his mind focused on one thing.

"I'm just trying to finish out the year strong and give a good shot at trying to three-peat."
