KANSAS CITY, Kan. - It’s almost a guaranteed double-double every time this week’s Hy-Vee Athlete of the Week hits the court.

Washington high school forward James Jappa averages 17 points and 15 rebounds a game.

“I had to gain a lot of mental confidence and a lot of mental strength. But in the end it helped me out to further myself,” Jappa said.

Not only does he get the job done on the court, but the senior also has a 3.6 GPA.

“This kid has worked so hard. Everything he’s getting, he deserves. He’s doing it on and off the floor,” head coach Eric King said.

Jappa is a member of the National Honors Society at Washington.

He hopes to play Division 1 basketball next year.
