PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. - Throughout his high school career, Vance Wentz had always had that rock his team could not climb. Arch-rival Rockhurst had beaten Shawnee Mission East four straight times. Wentz made sure to end that streak in his senior season.
"We hadn't beaten them since I was in seventh grade," he said. "So, it's been a long time."
Wentz wasted no time taking control of the game. He scored 10 points in the first quarter as the Lancers jumped out to a 15-4 lead. Shawnee Mission East went on to win 62-50. The Lancers improved to 11-1 with the victory.
"We've definitely gone through some dark times here in the past three years in terms of basketball. So, it feels great to be 11-1," he said.
Wentz is a big reason the Lancers are off to such a hot start. Head coach Shawn Hair says his senior captain has gradually stepped up his game throughout the years.
"His productivity has gone up immensely," Hair said. "He's done an unbelievable job of shooting the ball for us and just being a leader on the floor."
Division I colleges have taken notice of Wentz's progress through the years. He has committed to play at Montana State next year. First things first, he has some unfinished business at the high school level.
"We are competing for a league title. We want to win our sub-state and move on to the state tournament. It would be the first time I had ever been in the state tournament, and the rest of the seniors. Then, obviously, you play to win a state title," he said.
