LONDON - Two area Olympians will take to the track and field Tuesday in high jump and men’s track.
Maurice Mitchell, a sprinter from Raytown, will compete in the qualifying round of the men’s 200-meter race at 5:50 a.m. Kansas City time. Mitchell will go up against fellow racer Usain Bolt, who earlier in the Olympics won the men’s 100-meter race, earning the title “Fastest Man on Earth.”
“Kansas City has really done an awesome job to supporting my family,” Mitchell said in a Skype interview with 41 Action News. “I'm really thankful to them and all supporters in Kansas City.”
Mitchell won’t be the only area athlete competing on Tuesday.
University of Kansas State junior high jumper Erik Kynard will compete in the high jump final at 1 p.m. central at Olympic Stadium. NBC plans to show the competition in primetime on Tuesday night.
