OVERLAND PARK, Kansas - A Blue Valley West graduate has been named to this year’s Major League Soccer All-Star game.
Overland Park native and Sporting Kansas City defender Matt Besler won the MLS text voting contest. He received nearly three times as many votes than any other MLS player.
He earned 30 percent of the All-Star votes submitted through text behind the support of Sporting KC, his alma mater of Notre Dame and Kansas City-based mobile company Handmark. Besler and the MLS All-Stars will face Manchester United on July 27 at 7:30 p.m. CT at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.
“I want to thank all of the people who texted to vote for me and I am honored to be named as the AT&T Text Winner for the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game,” Besler said. “I look forward to representing Sporting Kansas City against Manchester United again.”
The 24-year-old Sporting KC defender has played in 16 matches this season. He had his first career goal against Chicago on March 26 and first career assist earlier this month at Portland.
Besler has tied a Sporting KC record by appearing in 12 straight games this season. Kansas City drafted Besler in the first round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.
