KANSAS CITY, Mo. - While the response has been minimal so far, some metro residents are voicing their opinions on a new “We the People” petition through whitehouse.gov. The petition calls for a mandate that the University of Missouri and the University of Kansas continue their rivalry in sports.
The rivalry ended last spring when the University of Missouri left the Big 12 conference for the Southeastern Conference. The school expressed interest in continuing a rivalry with Kansas, but KU officials declined.
The petition, started by a Springfield, Mo., man, has 39 signatures. It has a goal of reaching 25,000 by Feb. 6.

“KU and Mizzou have a shared history as exceptional academic institutions and a wonderful sports rivalry that benefits students and families as well as two great states,” the description for the petition states. “It is, in many opinions, better to avoid the petty bickering between the administrations of both schools and instead turn to the alumni, students, and fans that truly care about this wonderful tradition that we hold dear as Americans.”

The two teams formerly held several Kansas City area events, including an annual football game at Arrowhead and basketball games in the Big 12 tournament at the Sprint Center.
