OLATHE, Kan. - The Kansas Highway Patrol is asking for your help in finding a tractor trailer involved in a rush hour wreck Wednesday that seriously hurt a 33-year-old pregnant woman.
Officers were called a little before 7 a.m. to the northbound lanes of Interstate 35, just north of 175th Street, where Nikki McClure was trapped inside her vehicle.
According to a news release from the Patrol, McClure appeared to have hit the rear end of a tractor trailer, but the truck did not stop at the scene of the wreck. Andrea Nolte with Kansas Highway Patrol said information indicates the vehicle may have left Kansas and traveled north on I-35.
By late-morning Wednesday, McClure’s condition had been upgraded from critical to serious but stable. She later gave birth to a baby girl. The baby is doing well.
Skytracker video from over the scene showed McClure's heavily-damaged car had gone off the road and into a line of trees.
“The truck should have significant damage to the rear end protection system of the trailer,” the Patrol release read.
One northbound lane remained closed for more than four hours. All lanes were reopened by a little after 11 a.m., the Patrol reported.
The Patrol said witnesses described the truck as having an enclosed box, but could not provide a color. Evidence at the scene suggested there may be ice built up on the truck from traveling through icy areas, authorities said.
McClure's husband issued the following statement Wednesday evening:
"Thank you for the outpouring love and support during this difficult time. Nikki is in critical, but stable condition. We are happy to report that we have a healthy baby girl who is our little miracle. If you have information on the accident, please contact the Kansas Highway Patrol at (913) 782 – 8100. We are overwhelmed with the love and prayers of so many, and appreciate you respecting our privacy during this difficult time."
